Why even ambitious people rarely become successful
Why even ambitious people rarely become successfulWhy even ambitious people rarely become successfulSuccess isbedrngnisextrinsic. Its not measurable.Success can only truly occur internally, because it is based on emotion. At the most basic level, success is your relationship with yourself. Most people are living a lie. They purposefully ignore and distract themselves from what they deep down want for themselves. Many people want something mora for themselves. They have dreams and ambitions. Yet, few of these people ever get what they intended.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraBeing ambitious isnt enough. Far more important than ambition is commitment. When youre committed to something, you will be and dowhat is required for the attainment of that thing. Youll stop wondering and start building. Youll stop being distracted and start learning. Youll start connecting. Youll start failing .Youll get what you want, rather than have a long list of ambitions. Youll have actual accomplishments that reflect your inner goals and values. Your external environment will reflect your deepest internal views and aims.If youre committed to a marriage, youll change in whatever ways are necessary for your marriage to thrive. Youll become what is required to make it work. If youre committed to your craft, youll change and become what is required to do work at the level of your desire. You wont point to your limitations with a victim mentality. Youll change your limitations so they stop stopping you.Only those who are truly committed will become a new and different person in order to live their commitment. If youre not willing to change, then you arent committed to anything beyond what you currently have. If you dont believe you can change, then you cant commit to anything beyond what life randomly throws at you.The Myth Of The Unchanging SelfBecome a millionaire not for the million d ollars, but for what it will make of you to achieve it.Jim RohnYour life is a reflection of you. If you want to change your life, you have to change yourself. If you want to change the world, you have to be that change. If you want to become a millionaire, you need to become the kind of person that can do that. If you want healthy relationships, you need to become the kind of person that has healthy relationships.Interestingly, in our Western Culture, we falsely emphasize fixed traits and personality types. We believe very strongly in an unalterable nature which is uninfluenced and untouched by the environments in which we reside. We believe something about us is self-contained and exists outside of space and time. This is individualism at its finest, and it leads us to believe in some theoretical and true version of ourselves, which cannot and does not change. The truth is that you are always changing. Your brain and even biology are highly malleable. Your worldview is continually int egrating new information. When you change a part of any system, you change the whole. Thus, overtime, as you have new experiences, surround yourself with new people, and learn new things, you emerge as a new person. Yet, these changes occur gradually and in real-time, and thus are almost impossible for you to notice.Yet, as you learn new things over time, your brain literally creates new connections and is reshaped. The brain you will have in a year from now will literally be a different brain than the one you have now. Especially if you consciously reshape how you see and live in the world.Consequently, when you become fully committed to something, you throw the individualistic myths away. You are part of a dynamic system that is constantly changing. When youre committed, you stop justifying mediocrity in the name of authenticity. You stop lying to yourself about what you want and what you believe in.You create an environment that facilitates your commitment because you know that as a person, you take on the form of your environment. The only agency you truly have is to choose the influences that shape you, both internally and externally. If youre not committed, you rely on willpower. You remain indecisive. You leave things up to chance. You leave yourself outs. You never fully decide. When youre not committed, you live in a continual state of self-hatred and internal conflict. Over and over and over, you watch yourself consciously behave in ways that oppose your highest ambitions.Only Those Who Are Committed SucceedBeing ambitious isnt honorable. Wanting more for your life is a common desire. But being completely committed to something is not common. Its rare. Its rare because commitment requires, in the words of T.S. Eliot, nothing short of everything. The hardest thing you will give up is the false idea of what you think you are. You have no clue what you are. More importantly, there is no you that is fixed and permanent, only the individualistic idea you have of yourself. This authentic self is your worst enemy. Its the excuse you have for not evolving. Its your justification for not committing to something bigger and better. Its the chain around your neck, stopping you from putting yourself into situations that will demand you become a better version of you.As researcher and professor, Adam Grant, has said, But if authenticity is the value you prize most in life, theres a danger that youll stunt your own development Be true to yourself, but not so much that your true self never evolves.ConclusionIf youre truly committed to something, you will shape the circumstances which support your commitment. Youll let go of even things you once loved, which contradict the ambitions you truly want.Unlike the many people who want more for themselves but never truly get it, youll evolve. Youll be and do more than you ever thought possible because your current self and worldview is extremely limited. And your views, as well as yourself, will change. Will yo u succeed? Will you be honest enough with yourself to evolve?Or will you continue living a lie? Will you continue pointing to some imaginary version of yourself you must be authentic to?Ready toUpgrade?Ive created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. The Onboarding Process for Week One
The Onboarding Process for Week OneThe Onboarding Process for Week OneAfter you successfully recruit a highly sought-after job candidate, you can be left feeling like you just ran a marathon - accomplished and excited, but exhausted. So when you find the right fit, you dont want a poor onboarding experience to make your new employee think they chose the wrong employer.Skilled workers are in high demand, and they know it. If they start questioning your firms competency so quickly, they may not wait around to landsee if the situation improves. In todays market, a new recruit may jump ship just to see if another employer can offer a better fit.The importance of Week OneThe reality is that you dont know for sure if the newly minted employee is fully committed to their new work situation. Change is hard and stressful for everyone. People navigating a new work environment are bound to feel like a fish out of water. Theres also a chance the employee is wistful for their old job and missing former colleagues. Another possibility They might still be thinking about another employment opportunity they were pursuing. The best way to show new employees your firm is the right place for them is to have a strong onboarding process in place. Good or bad, you make lasting impressions in those first few days, so its essential to keep emphasizing to your new hire that they are in the right place. Dont let them doubt for a second that your company is excited to have them on the gruppe.Heres some advice for doing week-one onboarding the right way.Lay the groundwork earlyBefore your new employee even starts, theres a lot you can do to make sure theyre feeling confident about their new path. For example, call them or send a quick email to tell them how glad the team is to have them on board. Use that time to provide an overview of what they can expect on their first day (Were taking you out to lunch so you can get to know everyone.) and during the first week (Theres an all-hands meetin g on Wednesday, and itll be a great opportunity for you to learn about the company and department.)Consider sending your new hire any paperwork they can fill out ahead of time so they dont have to spend most of their first day on the job meeting with human resources. Also, forward any work materials they can review in advance so they can get up to speed on their new role and better understand expectations. Include an organizational chart that highlights key people theyll be working with.Dont forget to reach out to your existing staff during this time, too. Update them about the new hires professional background and how they will be contributing to the team.HIRING? WE CAN HELPMake the workspace sparkleEmployers often overlook the importance of making an employees workspace both comfortable and functional. Few things are mora demoralizing than showing up for your first day of work to find the company has done little or nothing to prepare for your arrival. The new hires workspace should be clean and stocked with everything needed to get down to business - from basic office supplies to a working phone and computer and a comfortable chair. Make sure all the current documentation for setting up email, voicemail and other work tools is readily available (and easy to understand). Its also good practice to have someone from IT standing by to help troubleshoot any technology issues so the employee doesnt spend their first day waiting to access email or the companys intranet. This simple courtesy also shows the new hire that the company is ready to help them succeed.Set aside some quality timeTaking a new hire to lunch on their first day is a well-known best practice. Also, consider setting up lunches or coffee meetings with people theyll be collaborating with. That will allow them to start forming new work relationships right away.It will also help your current staff to get to know their new colleague. Remember They need to adjust to the change, as well. Making sure ever yone has an opportunity to spend some quality time together during that first week helps promote an inclusive corporate culture.Dont forget to reserve some quality time on your calendar during that first week so you can get to know the employee and discuss their job duties and your expectations. Be available. Be present. Be engaged. Encourage them to come to you with any problems or concerns. Check in regularly to make sure theyre settling in. And touch base with other staff members to get their feedback on how their new colleague is performing and adjusting to the new environment.Give the green light to get workingAnother way to engage your new hire during Week One is to assign a meaningful task or project. That will show youre eager for them to contribute. It will also demonstrate your confidence in their abilities, which can help them feel like they made the right decision to join your firm.Just be careful not overwhelm your new employee. Even the most experienced workers require a learning curve. If they need any training, connect them with the necessary resources as soon as possible.Remember First impressions matter. If you want your new employee to stay for the long term, you need to ensure your onboarding process is a positive experience from Day One, through Week One and into the months ahead. How Indie Record Labels Work
How Indie Record Labels WorkHow Indie Record Labels WorkAn independent label, also known as an indie label, is a record label that is independently funded and not connected to one of the big three major labels - Universal, Sony and Warner. Indie labels range from home-based hobby labels to highly profitable, large businesses. In the 1990s, the line between indie labels and major labels began to blur somewhat, and now some large indie labels are actually distributed by the big three major labels. Indie labels often face an uphill battle trying to get their music heard, as they typically have far fewer financial resources to promote their music than the major labels do. Despite the struggle, many independents have survived and thrived for years. Many others may not have lasted forever but had a tremendous impact on music both creatively and in terms of business. History of Indie Labels Independent record labels have been around for much longer than fruchtwein people think. In fact , some of the first indie labels were started in the post-war era. Traditionally, many of these labels worked with artists who were not considered mainstream. For example, independents like Sun Records, which was founded in 1950 in Memphis, signed country and rock artists. Some of these artists include Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash.A lot of independents still operate that way - signing on talent that may be on the fringe. Britain was a hotspot for the independent scene, leading to the creation of several popular labels like Triumph and Chrysalis Records. Several successful artists British launched their own independent labels in the 60s and 70s- notably, The Beatles launched Apple Records and Elton John, who created The Rocket Record Company. The latter didnt fare so well and closed in 2007. As time went on and more people grew to understand the music and record industry, newer labels were coming to the limelight. In the 80s and 90s, rap artists were gaining notoriety after being signed by independent labels like Def Jam and schwimmbad Boy. Madonna - whose first label was Sire Records (once an independent itself) - helped other new artists on her own independent label, Maverick Records. Indie Market vs Majors Independent record labels are not necessarily profitable on their own. But according to Digital Music News, independents now outshine the major three record labels when it comes to revenue. The magazine reported independents collectively had more than 32% of the market share in revenue for both physical and digital music sales - more than each of the big three in 2017. Universal brought in 29.7%, while Sony and Warner raked in 21.9% and 16.2% respectively. Independents as a group also accounted for the most physical music sales when compared to each of the big three. There is no way to pinpoint how many independent record labels there are in existence. This is due to the rise in popularity of digital music, which allows people to cre ate their own labels easily. According to Profitable Venture, a small, standard independent record label can be started easily with very little money - anywhere between $20,000 and $50,000. Benefits of Signing With an Indie Label Indie labels have more freedom to pick and choose which artists they sign. If they decide to sign with you, its because they like your music and your taste. They are less likely to insist on changes to your sound or image than major companies. That means you will have more creative control with an indie label than with one of the Big Three. There is also a bigger likelihood you will own the rights to your own music. That means you can do what you like with the song once its recorded, whether you sell it for a commercial or for use in a movie or television show. The other, obvious benefit is the close relationship youll have with those who sign you on. You will get to know the indie label staff very well. With fewer artists to work with and a more intim ate staff, you are more likely to connect with someone and get a quick response. Most indie labels also sign smaller, shorter contracts, so if it doesnt work out, youre not stuck with the same company for very long. Drawbacks of Working With an Indie Label One of the biggest drawbacks to signing with an indie label is money. While there are some very profitable labels, most independent ventures are very tight on funds. Not only can they not afford large payouts, bonuses or large recording contracts, they also cannot afford large marketing campaigns or promotional tours to help build awareness of your work. This can make it more difficult to build a name for yourself and sell your records. Additionally, because indie labels are so small and often short-staffed, they can be disorganized and even confusing. Many of their agreements are done with just a handshake rather than a formal contract, so details can be missed and issues can arise due to misunderstandings. Finally, the small er size of indie labels can limit your future opportunities. Because of their smaller budgets and smaller string of artists, independent labels typically dont have strong relationships with the press, making coverage of your events hard to come by. Signing with an independent label has its upsides and downsides. Before you sign an agreement with any label, make sure you understand what you are agreeing to and what your options are. Who you sign with has huge implications for the future of your career.

Pride and diversity in the workplace
Pride and diversity in the workplace Pride and diversity in the workplacePosted October 13, 2011, by Andrea Riddell Some of Australias highest profile businesses are leading the march towards creating gay-friendly workplaces. Telstra, IBM, ING Australia and the Australian Federal Police are some of the leading employers who have signed up as foundation members for the Pride in Diversity program. The program, which was launched on 10 February 2010, aims to assist employers in responding to the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees. Pride in Diversity will work closely with human resource departments to assist with the inclusion and equality of LGBT workers within all sectors of the Australian workforce. Research shows that up to 60 per cent of LGBT people experience some form of harassment at work during their careers. Thats four times the rate of the general population, says Pride in Diversity Director Dawn Hough. Members of the program have access to orga nisational support from an account manager, an LGBT workplace training session, invitations to seminars, and members-only website resources. Businesses are encouraged to jump on board and promote a fair and diverse workplace, which in turn will reduce the costs of complaint resolution, absenteeism and staff turnover costs which can arise if an LGBT employee does elend feel safe, welcome or suffers from workplace abuse. Our research shows that the inability to be oneself at work, to constantly feel the need to self-edit conversations and to take on a different persona in order to be accepted, has a very real impact not only on the employee but on the organisation itself, says Doctor Raymond Trau from the Discipline of Work and Organisational Studies at the University of Sydney. Another incentive for businesses to sign-up is to take advantage of the pink dollar niche market. With the annual disposable income of Australian gay and lesbian households estimated at $10 billion in 2 004, the purchasing power of the LGBT community is a force to be reckoned with. Studies have also shown that the LGBT market is more inclined to buy products from companies that uphold diversity policies. Pride in Diversity is Australias first employer support program for the inclusion of LGBT employees, and is in partnership with ACON, Diversity Council Australia and Stonewall UK. Using bullet points helps focus the reader and easily clarifies relevant information. A variety of qualifications are included, such as certifications, technical skills, and patient-focused aptitudes. While you want to list pertinent skills that demonstrate you are highly qualified for the job, you want to limit the list to eight or fewer bullet points, which means you should stay away from generic skills. The experience section clearly points out the past work history and accomplishments. The jobseeker lists the past two p ositions and includes the job title, place of employment, and dates of service. It is easy to read due to the bullet points, and there are not too many of them to overload the reader. The jobseeker does a great job of demonstrating accomplishments by using quantitative metrics (25 to 30 patients per day and patients aged 1 to 18). The pediatric nurse practitioner resume sample also illuminates a variety of duties to show the breadth of experience such as patient care, coordination with other healthcare professionals, and administrative tasks. The education section clearly shows the schriftart of degree, year of completion, and name/location of school. While this section does not require a lot of detail, the prospective employer needs to see you have the necessary education to be eligible for the position. Why You Need a Strong Pediatric Nurse Practitioner ResumeWhile the expected job growth for nurse practitioners is higher than for many other fields, pediatrics is a specialty area, w hich can increase the competition. For this reason, making sure you have a top-notch resume is extremely important. Also, because hiring managers typically spend fewer than 10 seconds looking over a resume before deciding to continue or move on to another one, creating a document that is eye-catching right away is crucial.Use bullet points and list relevant information, such as in the pediatric nurse practitioner resume sample. This will help you make an impression on the employer and give you a better chance of being asked to come in for an interview.Costly Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Resume Mistakes To AvoidBecause you only have one chance to make a good first impression, there are certain mistakes you need to avoid when writing your document. As the pediatric nurse practitioner resume sample demonstrates, it is important to point out not only your abilities as a healthcare provider and colleague, but you should also show you are empathetic. The sample uses phrases such as caring and relationship building while illuminating practical skills such as diagnostic interpretation and disease management. Avoid focusing only on one aspect of the job or being too general. It is always a good idea to read over the job description and use similar keywords and phrases in your document. Skills important for this position may include leadership, interpersonal, critical-thinking, detail oriented, communication, and resourcefulness. It may seem obvious, but it is important to point out to keep away from spelling and grammatical errors. You should also never lie anywhere on your resume. Even one of these mistakes shows your lack of professionalism and lack of detail.ConclusionTo be considered for a sought-after position, your resume must be compelling and significant. As demonstrated in the pediatric nurse practitioner resume sample, include expertise applicable to the job and share work experiences that show a variety of accomplishments. Make use of metrics, write in good format, and keep it concise and relevant to catch the attention of the employer.

This is how dangerous denial is for your mental health
This is how dangerous denial is for your mental healthThis is how dangerous denial is for your mental healthAlmost all of us have had experiences so uncomfortable or traumatizing that we do everything in our power to push the memories or feelings aside. Or maybe there is an everyday reality we live with that feels too impossible to cope with, so we pretend it doesnt exist, and that dealing with it is not our responsibility. That is denial. The state of denial usually feels much mora comfortable than confronting difficult feelings or circumstances. But anyone in the mental health field will tell you that living in denial for too long will only backfire. Denial may feel easier, but it actually only intensifies whatever challenging feelings you are dealing with, making them more difficult to move on from. Can Denial Ever Be Helpful? Is there ever an amount of denial that is acceptable? Could it, in some circumstances, be protective and possibly useful as you navigate troubled times in your life?Rachel ONeill, Ph.D., professional clinical counselor andTalkspace therapist, says that theremaybe circumstances where this is the case, but denial is only every helpful in very limited quantities and lengths of time.Denial is a defense mechanism and it exists to help us cope with difficult situations, ONeill explains. Its never really helpful per se, because, eventually, an individual will need to face the reality of their situation. However, in some particular instances liketraumatizing events, denial may allow someone to keep a distance from the trauma until they are able to tackle it. Even then, denial is only helpful for very brief periods. Eventually, it becomes necessary to work on finding the space to accept the circumstances of the situation, says ONeill. The Problem With Living in DenialSo whats so problematic about denial, and why should we all learn how to confront and accept the most difficult feelings and events we experience?Avoiding the reality of a situation can be more harmful than whatever painful feelings are wrapped up in it, says ONeill. It may feel more comfortable to pull away from the hard things, but what happens in reality is that the more you distance yourself, the deeper you plunge - usually without even knowing it.In other words, the more entrenched you get in denial, the harder it can be to pull yourself from it, says ONeill.People who live in a state of denial will experience short-term consequences like feelings of isolation, anxiety, and sadness. Long-term consequences can include the feeling that you have never worked through your experience, and you may end up feeling perpetually stuck in it, ONeill explains. How To Conquer DenialIts pretty clear that denial is not a good distribution policy to remain, and that it should be avoided whenever possible. The problem is, because of the nature of denial and how prevalent it is, you may not even be aware that you are experiencing itIts the ultimate Catch-22. How can you stop be ing in denial if you dont know that you are in denial in the first place?Usually its someone outside your life who can point out that you are in a place of denial. It might be a friend or atherapistwho points out the ways in which youre using denial to cope with a situation, says ONeill. It goes without saying, if you are unable to cope with your feelings about an experience, finding a therapist you can trust is an excellent place for you to start.Confiding in close friends or family membersis helpful as well.Denial self-checksAdditionally, ONeill suggests that you can do a periodic self-checks with yourself to see if denial is getting the better of you. This can include asking yourself questions likeDo you spend a lot of time wishing the situation hadnt happened or had turned out differently?Do you find yourself refusing to accept a circumstance even through the circumstance is in fact a reality? If the answer to either or both of these questions is affirmative, ONeill suggest that t his is a time where you should consider exploring the ways that your state of denial may be impacting your life or ability to recover.Living in Denial Doesnt Have to be PermanentIf the circumstances that led you to denial are particularly traumatizing, you should certainly consider seeking professional help. However you work through this, be gentle with yourself.Remember that as hard as it will be, it will be freeing and healing to unearth the buried feelings. And you will end up feeling better and stronger in the long-run.This article was originally published on Talkspace.

Milbank@Harvard Offers Mid-level Associates Ivy League Professional Development
Milbank@Harvard Offers Mid-level Associates Ivy League Professional Development Milbank@Harvard Offers Mid-level Associates Ivy League Professional Development Throughout the year, Milbank whisks mid-level associates away from their desks around the world and sends them to Cambridge, Mass. for a one-of-a-kind, intensive professional development program, Milbank@Harvard. Every associate completes a week-long module once a year over the course of four years, with sessions led by top Harvard Business and Law School faculty, alongside Milbank partners. Recently, partner David Wolfson, who helped develop and manages the program, sat down with recent Milbank@Harvard âgraduateâ Anna Thomander, a senior associate in London who has recently completed the four-year program, and Laura Larsen, a New York-based fourth-year associate, to talk about the program. From Left, David Wolfson, Anna Thomander, and Laura Larsen. David: Laura, you recently finished your first Milbank@Harvard module. How did it meet your expectations so far? Laura: Iâd say it has met and surpassed my expectations. As an associate, you spend a few years hearing the buzz about the program from others going through it, but itâs hard to describe beyond that itâs âawesomeâ or âwonderful.â One of the things that I didnât necessarily expect going in was the mix of topics we covered: hard business and managerial skills, and then career-planning, marketing and business development, understanding your value and the value of the firm. Learning about macroeconomics in-depth from Harvard professors is wonderful, but thatâs only a part of it. Personally and professionally, the program also gives each associate a chance to self-reflect and to grow. I think thatâs all part of the magic of the program that becomes clearer when you experience it yourself. Anna: I agree, and from what Iâve heard from colleagues, Iâm not alone in thinking that Milbank@Harvard is the best professional education experience Iâve had in my career. I havenât heard of anything like it at other firms, especially geared toward mid-levels. You hear about programs for first-years or new partners, but not at this level. David: Iâm obviously biased, but I think the key reason why this program is so good is that we donât begin until people have been practicing for three or four years; then it develops with them through their seventh or eighth years. Laura: Yes, I had done a lot of MBA-oriented courses while in law school, but even the refresher business courses at Harvard were much more valuable to me now that I can apply them in context. Iâm at a point in my career where Iâm getting more involved in the harder pieces of deals, where there are problems that you have to actually solve and advise clients on â" rather than just taking the solutions and turning them into effective legal documentation, which you spend a lot of your first couple of years doing! Anna: Many of the lessons can be very concretely applied to our day-to-day work with clients. Iâm a restructuring lawyer. We did a session on valuations, which tends to be an issue more in restructurings in the U.S. than here in London, but that was really interesting, directly relevant to what I do. And I found the sessions where we looked at where things went wrong like case studies on Enron, Jérôme Kerviel, and General Motors, extremely thought-provoking; they helped me reflect on the reasons things go wrong in business, allocating responsibility, and ethics. On top of that, thereâs much more thatâs a lot more subtle, like learning how to assess and work with different personality types. Laura: That has been valuable for me as well â" learning how to communicate across various personality types in a group, and how people approach problems differently. I remember very vividly a class in which we had to survive in the Alaskan wilderness following a plane crash. Youâve been stranded, you have a list of supplies available to you, and you have to survive. And I remember that class in large part because we all died. Anna: My group all died, too, Laura! David: Yes, I can tell you that everyone always dies in that session! [Laughter] Laura: But thatâs the lesson, right? We learned that you have to think about the prejudices you have approaching situations, why you think you know more than you do, how to be aware of your own blind spots, and to value other peopleâs knowledge. These types of classes also help people to bond, network and talk across the offices and across the cultures that we come from â" they also taught me a lot about myself. Another big takeaway was the focus on marketing, learning about the firm as a business. They help make you aware as an associate of the need to build a personal brand, to understand the brand of your practice group and your firm. It makes this whole exercise of practicing together more productive and cohesive. David: You know, as we developed the program we were thinking that we might need to tailor sessions or break off groups to cater separately to our lawyers who do transactional work and our litigation and financial restructuring lawyers. But once we fell into it, we realized that it does not matter which practice area youâre in, itâs all relevant, pretty much, to everybody. Laura: Itâs actually helpful to look at issues from the perspective of someone in a different practice. David: Itâs interesting, here we have Laura, a young lawyer in New York working in leveraged finance, and Anna, a more senior lawyer in London in restructuring, and theyâve had the same training, on numerous levels, in terms of leadership and feedback and various skills, and in each of their class groups they know everyone in the firm worldwide as a result of this. Iâm very confident that if theyâre ever working on the same deal, they would approach things quite similarly, or would at least have a way to communicate, because of this common experience. And so I think the program has had a really significant impact on our culture. This wasnât something we initially focused on, as we were focused on excellent training and so on. But I think itâs one of the most profound things that have come out of it. Anna: Having come in as a lateral, the opportunity to spend time with peers from our different offices, as well as partners from all over, and to absorb the culture in this way, was really valuable. Beyond that, itâs a great thing to have on your C.V. â" I get asked about my Harvard experience all the time. To be able to spend time learning from top professors at Harvard for four weeks has just been a phenomenal privilege. David: Harvardâs executive team is fantastic. One of the reasons Harvard got into this is it wanted to understand what it should be doing in law schools to teach people who actually practice, to have interactions with young lawyers and learn what they find interesting and effective. So weâre pleased that theyâve found it valuable as well; we could not have asked for a better partner. This is a sponsored blog post from Milbank, Tweed, Hadley McCloy LLP. 3 Myths About Your Dream Job You Need to Get Over - The Muse
3 Myths About Your Dream Job You Need to Get Over - The Muse 3 Myths About Your Dream Job You Need to Get Over Youâve been told you can achieve anything you set your mind to, right? Thatâs the message thatâs been ingrained in us since childhood when we imagined becoming astronauts, athletes, and movie stars. Most of us come to realize that we canât all be LeBron James or Taylor Swift- and that we donât want to be, anyway! As we get older, we typically outgrow these fantasties of youth and begin mapping out a career thatâs aligned with our personal goals and values. Yet, in spite of this seemingly straightforward and logical process, many people still have a number of misconceptions about what a âdream jobâ actually entails. Career platitudes that weâve absorb over time may not only be misleading, they can also be downright damaging. Let me be clear: Thereâs nothing wrong with aspiring to do something you love. After all, everyone wants a career that is both fulfilling and that pays the bills. The problem is that having an idealized view of what constitutes this perfect job can actually wind up leading you away from work you love instead of toward it. When your expectations donât match reality, you can wind up plateauing, wondering what to do next and where to go. The key to finding your dream role is being able to distinguish the achievable from the fairy tale, and recognizing what it means to be fulfilled from a practical- not just passionate- standpoint. By becoming aware of the myths surrounding the ultimate fantasy job, you can make sure you donât pass up worthwhile work in a hopeless pursuit of an elusive ideal. 1. Passion Will Pay the Bills Itâs a tough pill to swallow, but passion alone doesnât pay the bills- at least not for most of us. Just because you care about something doesnât mean you can earn a living from it. In order for any venture to be successful, the market has to have a willingness and ability to pay for what youâre offering. For example, you may love working with college students on resume prep, but students are typically cash strapped, and universities often offer free career development support in response to this. That doesnât mean, however, that you should give up on doing what brings you excitement. Instead of diving head first into anything new, take small steps toward establishing yourself. Focus on your side projects and work on getting them to a place where you can survive on them alone. Itâs a strategy author Jeff Goins calls âbuilding a bridgeâ in his book The Art of Work: A Proven Path to Discovering What You Were Meant to Do. Rushing things along wonât pay off in the long run. Considering the case above, you could start helping college students by volunteering in the career services department or providing free advice on your blog. Over time, you can assess your success and determine when and how to monetize your endeavors. 2. When You Love What You Do, It Wonât Feel Like Work There is no such thing as a model career. No job has zero downsides, and itâs unrealistic to expect perfection from a particular role, employer, or yourself. There will always be tradeoffs and compromises youâll need to make in any position no matter how great the organization is or how awesome your boss is, and thatâs OK; knowing this ahead of time can help you make smart decisions that get you closer to the job you want. The trick is to be clear with yourself about what your values and priorities are. Having a solid grasp of this will likely make the unsavory parts of your job more tolerable. Often, you have to be willing to put up with a lot in order to follow your passion. Youâre the only one who can decide whether itâs worth the compromise. I work with people who desire to be entrepreneurs, and while running your own business is a worthy goal, I remind them that there will still be elements they donât 100% enjoy. You might love sales and working with customers and hate managing a budget, but until you grow and scale the company, youâre going to be responsible for tasks that bring you joy and others that don't. 3. Thereâs a Linear Path to Success- and Hard Work is All it Takes to Get There Many people make a short-sighted decision to work in a position that isnât up their alley, believing if they just work hard enough, it'll lead them to future success. The employee who victoriously rises from the mailroom to the C-Suite is a Cinderella story that fuels this dream-job myth. And, it's a pattern I frequently see with well-intentioned clients, who often fail to research whether thereâs an explicit connection between the job they take and the one they want. Even if they discover that a path does exist, they donât approach getting into their dream role in a proactive and effective way. They rely on working harder and longer hours, praying their boss will notice and reward them with a promotion that will suddenly make everything better. To side-step this trap, seek out mentors and see how you can model their career trajectory. Conducting informational interviews can give you peace of mind that youâre heading in the right direction and ensure that once you do get promoted, youâll be as content as you expect (which sure beats investing years in a dead-end job). Be clear with your employer about your expectations during the hiring process and throughout your tenure. Make your career goals known, and work together with your supervisor to establish defined objectives and milestones that put you in line for promotions that'll have you doing work that drives you. Your dream job isnât an exact destination; rather, itâs constantly evolving. The ideal career when youâre in your 20s may be a poor work-life fit by the time you turn 35. Itâs OK to change your mind and then change it again, but avoid constantly striving for some elusive professional fantasy. Instead of getting caught up in false truths about what defines a perfect job, keep your options open, and embrace the many opportunities that you encounter on along the way.

The Extras Can Add Up
The Extras Can Add Up The Extras Can Add Up The Extras Can Add Up Few things can be more stressful than trying to get into the college of your dreams. For the engineering school on that wish list, you know its best to do everything you can to stack the odds in your favor. Anything extra is a positive. And that often means: Extracurriculars. So which activities should you consider doing? One thing Kathleen Joyce, assistant dean for Student Recruitmentat the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Syracuse University recommends is aligning yourself with good national organizations, competitions, and clubs. Getting involved in engineering clubs and organizations helps a student not only to have the experience for their application but it helps educate them about what engineering is and helps them determine if it is the right fit for them, she says. There are big national organizations like FIRST Robotics and Project Lead the Way in which students can become involved. Also, many high schools have engineering or technology clubs. The FIRST LEGO League competition. Image: FIRST Joyce and Chris Wiles, directors of recruitment and retention at the University of Kansas School of Engineering, both encourage your own tinkering as well. Wiles gives an example. I remember we came across a student through the press who created a 3D printed prosthesis for a fellow high school student, he says. He ended up being accepted to our engineering school. Of course, even a part-time job, something many high schoolers rely on for pocket money, can be a leg up. It can work when you make it the right part-time job, Wiles says. Say, working at an automotive shop. That can actually be a huge advantage for someone in mechanical engineering. Or, if you live near a university, dont think you couldnt maybe get a job doing research for them while in high school. Succeeding in that lab; most students wont have that on their resume and it will help make you stand out. Joyce says a part-job shows that they are developing time-management skills, a work ethic, and a certain a level of responsibility, maturity, and discipline. The process of knowing how to work and how to accomplish a given task is great preparation for engineering. Finally, seemingly non-related interests arent automatically seen as lacking focus to Joyce and Wiles, but can actually show the positives of being multidimensional. Getting involved in activities at school and in their community helps students build their leadership and communication skills, she says. Activities like sports and the performing arts, even though they arent related to engineering, help students build additional skills, such as teamwork and creativity, which are advantageous in our programs. For arts, Wiles even recalls evidence that might help your cause further. There have been studies that show those who perform music have a knack for engineering, he says. You get the right decision-maker who believes in this and its one more thing on your side. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. Acing a Job Interview After Age 50
Acing a Job Interview After Age 50 Acing a Job Interview After Age 50 Youâre certainly qualified, but resting on your laurels wonât cut it in an interview. Follow these guidelines to land that job at any age.Have you used one of these common complaints? âI was fully qualified, and it makes no sense.â âThey simply donât know how to hire.â âThey told me that I was overqualified.â These are the sort of comments job seekers often make to Randy Block, a seasoned career-transition coach and consultant in the San Francisco Bay area.If youâre an âolderâ job hunter, more than likely you already know that the ultra-competitive job-search process is especially hard on you. Part of the challenge youâre facing is a major generation gap between Baby Boomer job hunters and the Gen-X hiring managers of today. As Block noted, âThirty-somethings donât want to hire their parents. Unfortunately, thatâs how we often come across - as their parents.âYou can succeed during interviews with younger hiring managers, but youâll want to think and act differently. Here are five places to start :Show passion for your workAs Block notes, relationships are based on shared values. He believes that shared values make up most of what we call âchemistry.â Chemistry is enhanced when we meet others who share an interest. This extends to your work, profession or industry. If there is little passion or commitment from you for your work, how can you expect others to get excited during the interview? On the other hand, if you consider yourself driven or committed to what you do for a living, youâll most likely hit it off with a hiring manager who has the same interest - whatever that personâs age. Be upfront about whatâs in it for them Nowadays, employers want to know what you can bring them. Older job seekers may shy away from bragging opportunities like this. But this is one talking point you need to be prepared to get.Tenure and duties wonât cut it. The best way to prepare for an interview is to focus on your personal brand. Prepare a personal brand statement for yourself - a simple sentence that offers three very important selling points about you. First, it should say who you are. Second, it should articulate your greatest strength(s). Third, it should explain the biggest benefit that you bring to your next employer. The purpose of your bran d is to go beyond mere duties and job listings and get to the âwhatâs in it for themâ benefit that will make the employer sit up and take notice. Offer guidance Block has found an important disparity between older job seekers and younger hiring managers: Boomers want to be led, while Gen Xers want to manage. Yet in coaching sessions with young managers, he observed that their leadership skills typically lag behind their management skills. If youâre a Boomer, take note and realize that you might not get the visionary leader you hoped for in your next hiring manager. However, Block says that this might just be an opportunity. He has discovered that most young managers need help and guidance. They actually appreciate being mentored, coached or advised. They recognize the need, but look at it as a temporary or project-based opportunity. This may open up an opportunity to sell yourself as a consultant whose many years of expertise can be useful in the role of a temporary coach or me ntor. This may be a great meld between the âmanagement versus leadershipâ dichotomy and increase your opportunities, especially considering companies are hiring more consultants during this economic downturn. As the economy improves, that 1099 contract could well turn into a salaried position. Think short-term According to Block and other employment analysts, many companies today view their short-term survival needs as paramount. Theyâre looking for players who can hit the ground now and help them grunt through the next six to nine months. That will require a change in your marketing approach : Phrases like âlong-termâ and âstrategicâ wonât have the sales impact of a year ago.Rather than emphasize the long haul in your resume and interview marketing, look instead at selling yourself as an expert who can get in and fix immediate problems quickly and efficiently. Downplay any talk about long-range solutions ; instead, focus on clear, results-oriented achievements for s hort-range problems.Talk moneyMoney talks, and it talks loudly. Money can also trump age, so try to get as close to the money as you can when you describe who you are and what you bring to the table.Keep in mind that all organizations have only two basic needs: revenue and productivity. This is what keeps any top manager up at night. If you can help them, they will seek your advice and counsel. Therefore, come to the interview armed with specific examples of how you can solve their money (or productivity) problem. Your past achievements are examples of how to tackle the similar problems they face today. If you can show yourself to be the problem-solver they need, youâll quickly rise to the short list of candidates. Your goal is to become the âgo-toâ person for their short-term revenue or productivity problems.SummaryGen Xer s need your help. Focus on ways you can help their short- term âsurvivabilityâ through this recession, and get as close as you can to their revenue or productivity concerns. Talk money, and focus on how you can help them produce immediate results. A younger manager would have to be very shortsighted not to explore a working relationship with someone more experienced. Capitalize on your wealth of experience to make a positive difference in the lives and careers of Gen Xer s.

5 Steps You Can Take Today to Land Your Dream Job Tomorrow
5 Steps You Can Take Today to Land Your Dream Job Tomorrow 5 Steps You Can Take Today to Land Your Dream Job Tomorrow Almost 30 percent of 25- to 33-year-olds know what their dream job is, but they arenât sure how to get it, according to LinkedIn . Are you one of them? If so, consider these five steps to landing your dream job. When Laura Mael was laid off from a banking job she liked in 2011, she did what many newly unemployed people do: She regrouped. âI found my dream job by evaluating what I really loved to do over my 25-year career and listing the things I wanted to keep doing as well as stop doing,â said Mael, who works in public relations for a bank. There were 17 things on the positive side, and Mael gets to do all of them at her current job. Consider other strategies to ensure that the dream job youâll be chasing is worth getting. Start by interviewing someone who currently holds the position you covet. Donât just ask how they got it. See if you can shadow them for a day or more so you can get a feel for what the job is really like. Rachel Carroll had the benefit of knowing during her college years that she wanted to be a designer. Upon graduation, she sought out a junior designer role only to be rebuffed. âBefore landing my dream job, I was an intern ,â said Carroll, whoâs the senior head of user experience (UX) at StudySoup. âIt isnât always easy pursuing an internship, [as] the demands are high, and many internships are unpaid or provide only a small stipend. [But] the payoff is invaluable.â If you find yourself in Carrollâs shoes, donât think internships are beneath you. They could lead right into your preferred role. If youâve been out of college longer, see if you might have to retrace your steps to earn a different degree, continue your education , or take on an entry-level or midlevel position. You wonât want to be disqualified by hiring managers for your dream job because you never gained a basic certification. Your roadmap should outline each step up to your ideal job. Carroll, for example, wanted to lead the UX team for her startup. So she started on a spectrum that included titles such as intern designer, UX or user interface designer and head of design. Make your career roadmap even more worthwhile by estimating how much time you should spend in each position. You can find hints by considering the job description for your dream role. The description could reveal what experience you need to qualify. Getting hands-on experience is imperative. It could prove to hiring managers that youâve experienced - not just read about - everything you need to know for your ultimate gig. Itâll also confirm your career choice for yourself. If Carroll didnât enjoy the ins and outs of UX design, for example, she probably wouldnât have loved managing a design team. Donât be afraid to switch employers if it keeps you pointed north on your roadmap. You wonât be alone if youâre mobile. Thirty-five percent of employees have switched jobs in the last three years, according to Gallup . Just remember that every former colleague and current co-worker is a connection that could help push you where you want to go. Include them as you network your way to the top . âI started sharing with everyone, âI love to do this, do you know anyone who needs someone who does this?ââ said Mael. Now imagine interviewing for your dream job . Youâre sitting across from a hiring manager, and they have your resume in one hand and the job description in the other. What isnât going to match up? Itâs healthy to ask yourself this question as you follow your roadmap - and before you start applying for your dream job. Mael, for example, had more than two decades of experience working toward her dream job as a public relations professional. However, she identified four gaps in her resume, including a lack of experience with TV or radio and a lack of connections with influencers in her field. One of Maelâs less-than-dream jobs on her way up the ladder, however, allowed her to interview C-level executives on-air. That experience helped her bridge some of the gaps on her resume. When critiquing your candidacy for your dream job, be hard on yourself. When you identify areas where youâre lacking, strategize on how to improve. Volunteer to take on extra projects at work if you have to. Better yet, start a side hustle to build your expertise. Not everyoneâs career path is as straight as Carrollâs. The Best Way To Prepare For A Phone Interview
The Best Way To Prepare For A Phone Interview The Best Way To Prepare For A Phone Interview Well, hereâs a bad thing that happened: letâs call our guy, âMike.â Mike was out to dinner around 6 pm, and his phone rang with a number he didnât recognize. He answered and it was an HR person from an organization he was interested in in his job search. She wanted to conduct a phone interview. Mike excused himself, stepped into the restaurant lobby, and answered her series of questions. Letâs talk about the several things wrong with that scenario: it wasnât quiet enough, Mike wasnât ready, and he definitely didnât give his greatest answers, because he was doing the phone interview on the fly. Moral of the story: donât let this be you. A phone interview is not to be taken lightly. Treat it with the exact same level of regard you would an in-person interview. Now that you know not to do all this while youâre out to dinner, letâs talk about the best ways to make sure youâre ready for a phone interview. Youâre Allowed To Not Take The Call This can be a little bit scary, and itâs definitely counter-intuitive. Though it may not be something you want to do, if the interviewer calls at an inopportune moment, donât take the call. Either donât answer the phone just based on the fact that you donât recognize the number, and let it go to voice mail, or if you do answer, tell the person you canât speak right now. Then ask if youâd be able to return their call at 10 am the next day. Itâs highly unlikely that the personâs going to say, âNo, absolutely not. Itâs right now or never.â Thatâs not a professional response. You can more reasonably expect, âOf course. Iâm sorry for the late hour. Letâs talk tomorrow at such and such a time.â I realize that when youâre in the midst of job search you donât want to miss anything. But guess what? If you allow yourself to be caught off-guard, and donât perform your best, you just maximized your chances of not hearing from those folks again. Youâre Allowed To Have A Pleather Portfolio Arm yourself with a nice leather / pleather portfolio. It needs to be a portfolio so that you have a hard surface to write on. You need that hard surface because you need to be up and walking around, which conveys more energy that, I promise you, the interviewer can âhearâ through the phone. Put your resume on 1 side and stories that you want to tell about your successes on the other side. Make sure those stories are written in bullets, not paragraphs â" you donât want to sound like youâre reading. When you're interviewing, one of the things that makes you not perform well is that you're trying to remember things. Your brain is working so hard to remember this or that, and it makes you not speak in a natural way. You have a story thatâs core and natural to you â" just tell it. Donât read it. Donât remember it. Youâre Allowed To Ask Whatâs Next This applies to phone interviews and in-person interviews. Too often, candidates wonder whatâs going to happen afterwards. Donât wonder. Ask them what the next step is, or say, âListen, Iâd like to follow up with you in two days, three days,â or whatever makes sense. Take control of this thing. Thatâs how you job search like a boss! Learning next steps and timing eliminates 75% of the anxiety associated with this process. You go in there, you perform well, you want to know whatâs next. Make sure to ask that question. Did you know that it takes the average candidate 17 interviews before hearing 1 offer?
