Telstra, IBM, ING Australia and the Australian Federal Police are some of the leading employers who have signed up as foundation members for the Pride in Diversity program. The program, which was launched on 10 February 2010, aims to assist employers in responding to the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees. Pride in Diversity will work closely with human resource departments to assist with the inclusion and equality of LGBT workers within all sectors of the Australian workforce. Research shows that up to 60 per cent of LGBT people experience some form of harassment at work during their careers. Thats four times the rate of the general population, says Pride in Diversity Director Dawn Hough. Members of the program have access to orga nisational support from an account manager, an LGBT workplace training session, invitations to seminars, and members-only website resources. Businesses are encouraged to jump on board and promote a fair and diverse workplace, which in turn will reduce the costs of complaint resolution, absenteeism and staff turnover costs which can arise if an LGBT employee does elend feel safe, welcome or suffers from workplace abuse. Our research shows that the inability to be oneself at work, to constantly feel the need to self-edit conversations and to take on a different persona in order to be accepted, has a very real impact not only on the employee but on the organisation itself, says Doctor Raymond Trau from the Discipline of Work and Organisational Studies at the University of Sydney. Another incentive for businesses to sign-up is to take advantage of the pink dollar niche market. With the annual disposable income of Australian gay and lesbian households estimated at $10 billion in 2 004, the purchasing power of the LGBT community is a force to be reckoned with. Studies have also shown that the LGBT market is more inclined to buy products from companies that uphold diversity policies. Pride in Diversity is Australias first employer support program for the inclusion of LGBT employees, and is in partnership with ACON, Diversity Council Australia and Stonewall UK. Or maybe there is an everyday reality we live with that feels too impossible to cope with, so we pretend it doesnt exist, and that dealing with it is not our responsibility. That is denial.The state of denial usually feels much mora comfortable than confronting difficult feelings or circumstances. But anyone in the mental health field will tell you that living in denial for too long will only backfire. Denial may feel easier, but it actually only intensifies whatever challenging feelings you are dealing with, making them more difficult to move on from.Can Denial Ever Be Helpful?Is there ever an amount of denial that is acceptable? Could it, in some circumstances, be protective and possibly useful as you navigate troubled times in your life?Rachel ONeill, Ph.D., professional clinical counselor andTalkspace therapist, says that theremaybe circumstances where this is the case, but denial is only every helpful in very limited quantities and lengths of time.Denial is a defense mechanism and it exists to help us cope with difficult situations, ONeill explains. Its never really helpful per se, because, eventually, an individual will need to face the reality of their situation.However, in some particular instances liketraumatizing events, denial may allow someone to keep a distance from the trauma until they are able to tackle it. Even then, denial is only helpful for very brief periods. Eventually, it becomes necessary to work on finding the space to accept the circumstances of the situation, says ONeill.The Problem With Living in DenialSo whats so problematic about denial, and why should we all learn how to confront and accept the most difficult feelings and events we experience?Avoiding the reality of a situation can be more harmful than whatever painful feelings are wrapped up in it, says ONeill. It may feel more comfortable to pull away from the hard things, but what happens in reality is that the more you distance yourself, the deeper you plunge - usually without even knowing it.In other words, the more entrenched you get in denial, the harder it can be to pull yourself from it, says ONeill.People who live in a state of denial will experience short-term consequences like feelings of isolation, anxiety, and sadness. Long-term consequences can include the feeling that you have never worked through your experience, and you may end up feeling perpetually stuck in it, ONeill explains.How To Conquer DenialIts pretty clear that denial is not a good distribution policy to remain, and that it should be avoided whenever possible. The problem is, because of the nature of denial and how prevalent it is, you may not even be aware that you are experiencing itIts the ultimate Catch-22. How can you stop be ing in denial if you dont know that you are in denial in the first place?Usually its someone outside your life who can point out that you are in a place of denial. It might be a friend or atherapistwho points out the ways in which youre using denial to cope with a situation, says ONeill.It goes without saying, if you are unable to cope with your feelings about an experience, finding a therapist you can trust is an excellent place for you to start.Confiding in close friends or family membersis helpful as well.Denial self-checksAdditionally, ONeill suggests that you can do a periodic self-checks with yourself to see if denial is getting the better of you. This can include asking yourself questions likeDo you spend a lot of time wishing the situation hadnt happened or had turned out differently?Do you find yourself refusing to accept a circumstance even through the circumstance is in fact a reality?If the answer to either or both of these questions is affirmative, ONeill suggest that t his is a time where you should consider exploring the ways that your state of denial may be impacting your life or ability to recover.Living in Denial Doesnt Have to be PermanentIf the circumstances that led you to denial are particularly traumatizing, you should certainly consider seeking professional help. However you work through this, be gentle with yourself.Remember that as hard as it will be, it will be freeing and healing to unearth the buried feelings. Every associate completes a week-long module once a year over the course of four years, with sessions led by top Harvard Business and Law School faculty, alongside Milbank partners. Recently, partner David Wolfson, who helped develop and manages the program, sat down with recent Milbank@Harvard “graduate” Anna Thomander, a senior associate in London who has recently completed the four-year program, and Laura Larsen, a New York-based fourth-year associate, to talk about the program. From Left,  David Wolfson,  Anna Thomander, and  Laura Larsen. David: Laura, you recently finished your first Milbank@Harvard module. How did it meet your expectations so far?   Laura: I’d say it has met and surpassed my expectations. As an associate, you spend a few years hearing the buzz about the program from others going through it, but it’s hard to describe beyond that it’s “awesome” or “wonderful.” One of the things that I didn’t necessarily expect going in was the mix of topics we covered: hard business and managerial skills, and then career-planning, marketing and business development, understanding your value and the value of the firm. Learning about macroeconomics in-depth from Harvard professors is wonderful, but that’s only a part of it. Personally and professionally, the program also gives each associate a chance to self-reflect and to grow. I think that’s all part of the magic of the program that becomes clearer when you experience it yourself. Anna: I agree, and from what I’ve heard from colleagues, I’m not alone in thinking that Milbank@Harvard is the best professional education experience I’ve had in my career. I haven’t heard of anything like it at other firms, especially geared toward mid-levels. You hear about programs for first-years or new partners, but not at this level. David: I’m obviously biased, but I think the key reason why this program is so good is that we don’t begin until people have been practicing for three or four years; then it develops with them through their seventh or eighth years. Laura: Yes, I had done a lot of MBA-oriented courses while in law school, but even the refresher business courses at Harvard were much more valuable to me now that I can apply them in context. I’m at a point in my career where I’m getting more involved in the harder pieces of deals, where there are problems that you have to actually solve and advise clients on â€" rather than just taking the solutions and turning them into effective legal documentation, which you spend a lot of your first couple of years doing! Anna: Many of the lessons can be very concretely applied to our day-to-day work with clients. I’m a restructuring lawyer. We did a session on valuations, which tends to be an issue more in restructurings in the U.S. than here in London, but that was really interesting, directly relevant to what I do. And I found the sessions where we looked at where things went wrong like case studies on Enron, Jérôme Kerviel, and General Motors, extremely thought-provoking; they helped me reflect on the reasons things go wrong in business, allocating responsibility, and ethics. On top of that, there’s much more that’s a lot more subtle, like learning how to assess and work with different personality types. Laura: That has been valuable for me as well â€" learning how to communicate across various personality types in a group, and how people approach problems differently. I remember very vividly a class in which we had to survive in the Alaskan wilderness following a plane crash. You’ve been stranded, you have a list of supplies available to you, and you have to survive. And I remember that class in large part because we all died. Anna: My group all died, too, Laura! David: Yes, I can tell you that everyone always dies in that session! [Laughter] Laura: But that’s the lesson, right? We learned that you have to think about the prejudices you have approaching situations, why you think you know more than you do, how to be aware of your own blind spots, and to value other people’s knowledge. These types of classes also help people to bond, network and talk across the offices and across the cultures that we come from â€" they also taught me a lot about myself. Another big takeaway was the focus on marketing, learning about the firm as a business. They help make you aware as an associate of the need to build a personal brand, to understand the brand of your practice group and your firm. It makes this whole exercise of practicing together more productive and cohesive. David: You know, as we developed the program we were thinking that we might need to tailor sessions or break off groups to cater separately to our lawyers who do transactional work and our litigation and financial restructuring lawyers. But once we fell into it, we realized that it does not matter which practice area you’re in, it’s all relevant, pretty much, to everybody. Laura: It’s actually helpful to look at issues from the perspective of someone in a different practice. David: It’s interesting, here we have Laura, a young lawyer in New York working in leveraged finance, and Anna, a more senior lawyer in London in restructuring, and they’ve had the same training, on numerous levels, in terms of leadership and feedback and various skills, and in each of their class groups they know everyone in the firm worldwide as a result of this. I’m very confident that if they’re ever working on the same deal, they would approach things quite similarly, or would at least have a way to communicate, because of this common experience. And so I think the program has had a really significant impact on our culture. This wasn’t something we initially focused on, as we were focused on excellent training and so on. But I think it’s one of the most profound things that have come out of it. Anna: Having come in as a lateral, the opportunity to spend time with peers from our different offices, as well as partners from all over, and to absorb the culture in this way, was really valuable. Beyond that, it’s a great thing to have on your C.V. â€" I get asked about my Harvard experience all the time. To be able to spend time learning from top professors at Harvard for four weeks has just been a phenomenal privilege. David: Harvard’s executive team is fantastic. One of the reasons Harvard got into this is it wanted to understand what it should be doing in law schools to teach people who actually practice, to have interactions with young lawyers and learn what they find interesting and effective. 3 Myths About Your Dream Job You Need to Get Over - The Muse 3 Myths About Your Dream Job You Need to Get Over You’ve been told you can achieve anything you set your mind to, right? That’s the message that’s been ingrained in us since childhood when we imagined becoming astronauts, athletes, and movie stars. Most of us come to realize that we can’t all be LeBron James or Taylor Swift- and that we don’t want to be, anyway! As we get older, we typically outgrow these fantasties of youth and begin mapping out a career that’s aligned with our personal goals and values. Yet, in spite of this seemingly straightforward and logical process, many people still have a number of misconceptions about what a “dream job” actually entails. Career platitudes that we’ve absorb over time may not only be misleading, they can also be downright damaging. Let me be clear: There’s nothing wrong with aspiring to do something you love. After all, everyone wants a career that is both fulfilling and that pays the bills. The problem is that having an idealized view of what constitutes this perfect job can actually wind up leading you away from work you love instead of toward it. When your expectations don’t match reality, you can wind up plateauing, wondering what to do next and where to go. The key to finding your dream role is being able to distinguish the achievable from the fairy tale, and recognizing what it means to be fulfilled from a practical- not just passionate- standpoint. By becoming aware of the myths surrounding the ultimate fantasy job, you can make sure you don’t pass up worthwhile work in a hopeless pursuit of an elusive ideal. 1. Passion Will Pay the Bills It’s a tough pill to swallow, but passion alone doesn’t pay the bills- at least not for most of us. Just because you care about something doesn’t mean you can earn a living from it. In order for any venture to be successful, the market has to have a willingness and ability to pay for what you’re offering. For example, you may love working with college students on resume prep, but students are typically cash strapped, and universities often offer free career development support in response to this. That doesn’t mean, however, that you should give up on doing what brings you excitement. Instead of diving head first into anything new, take small steps toward establishing yourself. Focus on your side projects and work on getting them to a place where you can survive on them alone. It’s a strategy author Jeff Goins calls “building a bridge” in his book The Art of Work: A Proven Path to Discovering What You Were Meant to Do. Rushing things along won’t pay off in the long run. Considering the case above, you could start helping college students by volunteering in the career services department or providing free advice on your blog. Over time, you can assess your success and determine when and how to monetize your endeavors. 2. When You Love What You Do, It Won’t Feel Like Work There is no such thing as a model career. No job has zero downsides, and it’s unrealistic to expect perfection from a particular role, employer, or yourself. There will always be tradeoffs and compromises you’ll need to make in any position no matter how great the organization is or how awesome your boss is, and that’s OK; knowing this ahead of time can help you make smart decisions that get you closer to the job you want. The trick is to be clear with yourself about what your values and priorities are. Having a solid grasp of this will likely make the unsavory parts of your job more tolerable. Often, you have to be willing to put up with a lot in order to follow your passion. You’re the only one who can decide whether it’s worth the compromise. I work with people who desire to be entrepreneurs, and while running your own business is a worthy goal, I remind them that there will still be elements they don’t 100% enjoy. You might love sales and working with customers and hate managing a budget, but until you grow and scale the company, you’re going to be responsible for tasks that bring you joy and others that don't. 3. There’s a Linear Path to Success- and Hard Work is All it Takes to Get There Many people make a short-sighted decision to work in a position that isn’t up their alley, believing if they just work hard enough, it'll lead them to future success. The employee who victoriously rises from the mailroom to the C-Suite is a Cinderella story that fuels this dream-job myth. And, it's a pattern I frequently see with well-intentioned clients, who often fail to research whether there’s an explicit connection between the job they take and the one they want. Even if they discover that a path does exist, they don’t approach getting into their dream role in a proactive and effective way. They rely on working harder and longer hours, praying their boss will notice and reward them with a promotion that will suddenly make everything better. To side-step this trap, seek out mentors and see how you can model their career trajectory. Conducting informational interviews can give you peace of mind that you’re heading in the right direction and ensure that once you do get promoted, you’ll be as content as you expect (which sure beats investing years in a dead-end job). Be clear with your employer about your expectations during the hiring process and throughout your tenure. Make your career goals known, and work together with your supervisor to establish defined objectives and milestones that put you in line for promotions that'll have you doing work that drives you. Your dream job isn’t an exact destination; rather, it’s constantly evolving. The ideal career when you’re in your 20s may be a poor work-life fit by the time you turn 35. It’s OK to change your mind and then change it again, but avoid constantly striving for some elusive professional fantasy. Instead of getting caught up in false truths about what defines a perfect job, keep your options open, and embrace the many opportunities that you encounter on along the way.

Apply Now to Become an ECLIPSE Intern Apply Now to Become an ECLIPSE Intern Apply Now to Become an ECLIPSE Intern Dec. 9, 2016 ASME is now accepting applications for the Early Career Leadership Intern Program to Serve Engineering (ECLIPSE) program - a unique opportunity for early career members of ASME to learn first-hand about the inner workings of the Society. If youre interested in applying for the 2017-2018 program, now is the time to act. The deadline to submit an application for the program is Jan. 3, 2017. Once accepted to the program, each ECLIPSE intern is assigned to a specific unit of the Society for a one-year term, during which he or she will work closely with a dedicated coach from ASME leadership to complete one or more projects. Society units ECLIPSE interns may work with include the Board of Governors, the Volunteer Orientation and Leadership Training (VOLT) Academy, Engineering for Global Development, Technical Events and Content, Standards and Certification, and Government Relations, among others. ECLIPSE interns will have the chance to travel to meetings and participate in workshops and training sessions to build leadership skills, which will serve them in their professional and personal lives. There is a wide range of opportunities for interns to network among themselves and with senior Society officers to see how they can incorporate the ASME experience into their career development. In addition, past ECLIPSE interns have gone on to serve in leadership positions within ASME, such as member of the Board of Governors and member of the Committee on Finance and Investment. The ECLIPSE program is open to ASME members with three to 10 years of professional experience as an engineer who have previous experience serving on an ASME section, division, institute or committee and the ability to work on volunteer projects and attend required events. Interns are expected to attend the ASME Annual Meeting in June and the International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE) in November, as well as a second Annual Meeting at the end of their term as intern. For the engineering school on that wish list, you know its best to do everything you can to stack the odds in your favor. Anything extra is a positive. And that often means: Extracurriculars. So which activities should you consider doing? One thing Kathleen Joyce, assistant dean for Student Recruitmentat the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Syracuse University recommends is aligning yourself with good national organizations, competitions, and clubs. Getting involved in engineering clubs and organizations helps a student not only to have the experience for their application but it helps educate them about what engineering is and helps them determine if it is the right fit for them, she says. There are big national organizations like FIRST Robotics and Project Lead the Way in which students can become involved. Also, many high schools have engineering or technology clubs. Let’s talk tomorrow at such and such a time.” I realize that when you’re in the midst of job search you don’t want to miss anything. But guess what? If you allow yourself to be caught off-guard, and don’t perform your best, you just maximized your chances of not hearing from those folks again. You’re Allowed To Have A Pleather Portfolio Arm yourself with a nice leather / pleather portfolio. It needs to be a portfolio so that you have a hard surface to write on. You need that hard surface because you need to be up and walking around, which conveys more energy that, I promise you, the interviewer can “hear” through the phone. When you're interviewing, one of the things that makes you not perform well is that you're trying to remember things. Your brain is working so hard to remember this or that, and it makes you not speak in a natural way. You have a story that’s core and natural to you â€" just tell it. Don’t read it. Don’t remember it. You’re Allowed To Ask What’s Next This applies to phone interviews and in-person interviews. Too often, candidates wonder what’s going to happen afterwards. Don’t wonder. Ask them what the next step is, or say, “Listen, I’d like to follow up with you in two days, three days,” or whatever makes sense. Take control of this thing. That’s how you job search like a boss!
